Michael I. Jordan is a distinguished professor at the University of California, Berkeley, with joint appointments in computer science and statistics. A pioneer in statistical machine learning for nearly four decades, his contributions span variational inference, graphical models, optimization theory, and reinforcement learning. Named the world's most influential computer scientist by Science magazine in 2016 , he has in recent years turned his attention to an ambitious project: embedding core economic principles — markets, game theory, multi-agent coordination — at the heart of artificial intelligence. His central thesis is a provocative one: rather than pursuing autonomous systems that outperform humans, AI should aim to create new forms of human interaction, capable of expanding economic opportunity rather than eroding it. A member of the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering, recipient of the 2022 WLA Prize in Computer Science and the IEEE John von Neumann Medal in 2020, Michael I. Jordan is an essential voice for thinking about the future of AI at a societal scale.
Vianney Perchet is a professor at the Center for Research in Economics and Statistics (CREST) at ENSAE, whose work sits at the intersection of mathematics, computer science and economics, with a central focus on the interplay between machine learning and game theory. His research spans from pure theory — such as optimal convergence rates of algorithms — to concrete applications, including modeling user behavior and optimizing recommendation systems. He is also a principal researcher at the Criteo AI Lab in Paris, where he works on efficient exploration in these same systems. His recent work focuses notably on mechanism design for auctions, online fair allocation problems, and learning algorithms in multi-agent environments — questions that lie at the heart of modern digital markets. A leading figure at the intersection of AI and computational economics in France, Vianney Perchet embodies the fruitful dialogue between algorithms and markets.
